WHAT IS HYPERFLUX?
I’ve been a composer of orchestral and contemporary music for over 20 years. Throughout that time, I’ve often been faced with a few recurring thoughts:
1. “I really wish more people enjoyed orchestral music. That way, they’d appreciate the music I create more”.
2.“Great! That chorus I had in mind for this R&B track I’m working on is hittin’!” Problem; it sounds better sung as rock.”
3. “I really love this other artist’s song, I just wish it had a message I could get onboard with.”
While genre fusion is nothing new, and inspirational music definitely exists; I would to introduce an entirely new fusion genre that not only accomplishes the above-mentioned issues, but also serves as source where those who identify with and appreciate my philosophical stances can come to hear music speaking directly to the tenets of said world view.
I give you Hyperflux:
hyperflux (noun)
1 : A non-generative artificial intelligence created piece of music tuned to 432hz which takes as its “mother tongue” orchestral music : it blends other, more contemporary genres of music into itself to create orchestral expressions of them : it infuses hyperplane wind (Torah) into its messages : it may include fictitious or historical events and/or stories in the form of spoken word narratives.
Phew, that was a lot, lol. But I feel a long-winded, precise definition of this new genre was necessary. Here’s why.
Because of my belief in the Torah, I’ve quite honestly been unable to find much of anything (movies, books, anime, music) that I align with. This is no disrespect to other belief systems, just an acknowledgement that what I believe isn’t heavily sought after; and that’s okay.
You might argue “Hey, Micha’El, gospel music does exist.” Well, sure. But far too often those messages skew heavily Christian. I’m not a Christian. I’m a law-keeper and follower of the Messiah, Yashua BinDavid. There’s a difference. Moreover, there is a specific sound and delivery that tends to go along with gospel. I’m defining an entirely new sound.
Also, the genre-bending nature of my work isn’t really something the system can accept. It actively breaks it in fact. In the first song of its kind under the genre Hyperflux, The Properties of “Aether” crystallizes this point.
It starts off with direct quotes from the Codex SonVeganus. It then goes into a hard rock inspired chorus. I shift right after that to an R&B like delivery for the versus. There’s a couple bars of wrap, and historical fiction….you get the point. It’s literally me reaching into the winds of the hyperplane and pulling the creation out as it is. I don’t say to myself “This is good, but in order for it to match the rest of the song, I need to do ‘x’”. To hell with all that. The song is what it is.
On Amuse when I submitted, they understandably had no genre I could realistically set my work to other than “Alternative”. I understand this hurts potential sales and algorithm boosts, but I don’t care.
When the full album that contains The Properties of “Aether”, The Duelsman, releases, tracks with metal, r&b, folk, and punk expressions will be included. Which brings me to another point. A track itself can be Hyperflux, but so can an entire album. The Duelsman follows the same structure of my debut album KOBU (2024). There is a prologue, seven chapters, and an epilogue.
However, The Duelsman has the work structured so that the prologue, The Wandering Swordsman, and the epilogue, Dominus, are fully orchestrated pieces of instrumental work; with the seven chapters in between being fused works. I do this because I really want for the entrance and exit to piece to be orchestral. Moreover, though not necessary to be considered Hyperflux, I’ve taken a classical music concept/category, themes and variations, and incorporated that into the work. So, the Duelsman has a theme that is introduced in the prologue. It has both a melodic and lyrical (“Come walk with me”) counterpart. Though, the lyrical component isn’t expressed until chapter one.
I’ve long called orchestral music “the mother tongue” of all music. Because all the concepts you hear in modern music are rooted in orchestral music. Moreover, there are some observably true, exclusive properties belonging almost exclusively to orchestral music that bear mentioning:
1. Structural Complexity; music that is not based around repetitive loops, (like a lot of contemporary music) exercises the brain’s spatial and pattern-recognition in a different way.
2. Non-Lyrical; most orchestral music is instrumental. By not having lyrics, the pre-frontal cortex can reach a heightened state without interference which can be good for optimizing memory retention and focus. To add to this, from my own personal thoughts, it’s almost like the difference between reading a book, and watching a movie. The book almost always seems better because you are imagining the images for yourself. This is why scary movies that don’t really show the enemy do so well. You’re depending on the viewer to “create” fear in their own minds. Note: I understand one can listen to instrumental music from any genre. But again, it’s notably different than most orchestral music due to the mostly repetitive structure.
Why 432hz? There is a lot of conjecture regarding this frequency out there. I’ll forgo that and give you my reasoning for using it based on observable truth. People in actual trials and tests exhibited:
1. A marked decrease in heart rate
2. Reduced blood pressure and respiratory rate
3. Decreased cortisol
4. Improved sleep quality
And from my own personal thoughts and experience while mixing tracks, I feel the vocals sound more emotive. With regard to the instruments, there is something about the frequency that, in my opinion, gives them a more “human” sound. Almost as though, you could imagine a human with the voice of the trumpet. Weird, I know, but I’m just giving you my feedback as a producer.
If you’ve made it to the end of this article, thanks for listening to your neighborhood polykraft rant for a bit! Stay tuned for plenty of Hyperflux music coming very soon!
